DIVAS!

DIVAS was my first large-scale, large-stage theatre show, and I've grown so much from the experience. In my very first show, "Kiss of the Spiderwoman", I was thinking, "you mean I have to walk AND sing?", and now in DIVAS! we're doing full-out dance routines while we sing! Selling song after song, night after night, having full confidence in myself as I present my most vulnerable emotions to an audience I don't know has been a total challange , but one that I love. Someone once said that if you're not uncomfortable, then you're not growing or trying anything new. And that is what motivated me to try out theater...it made me uncomfortable. Well, not so much anymore. The new list of DIVAS I'm paying tribute to are Judy Garland, Sarah Vaughn, Carole King, Mariah Carey, Norah Jones, and Liza Minelli.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

You may have seen articles in the Nuvo, InTake Weekly, and/or the Star about Theatre on the Square's newest production "Kiss of the Spider Woman". I was quite fortunate to be chosen for the role of Marta and working with the talented cast has proven to be a learning experience as well as loads of fun and laughter (yes, they're all hams). The story is so juicy and riveting that I'm usually backstage listening/peeking onstage as I await my moment in the spotlight. Sometimes I'm so emotionally involved I have to fight back the tears and focus on my own lyrics and lines! It's such a perfect part for a baby in theater. I get to wear pretty costumes and sing purty songs. It is a must-see so please come-see!

The "Request"

Every performing musician is used to people in the audience approaching them and asking them "Do you take requests?" - and from my own personal experience, I hate to say that I usually can't grant them their wish, which doesn't mean my ear is lacking, but my awareness of pop music definitely is. I like to blame part of that on my upbringing...being homeschooled in a small, homogeneous village, but now that I've been in Indy for the last 8 years, it's probably time I do some homework.

Some particularly humiliating experiences that prove this point were when someone asked me to play Girl from Ipanema which is a 'standard' for most musicians. I got through the first half with confidence, but forgot that the bridge has very sophisticated chord movement and I just melted and decided to do a 'fade'. Most recently, I was asked to do "Ribbon in the Sky" which I've heard a few times on WTLC, but after I did a little intro I blanked and couldn't remember how the verse started and instead morphed into "I Just Called to Say I Love You" (at least I stuck with the Stevie Wonder theme anyways!). One of my strangest experiences was when a man asked for "Moon River" which is a beautiful tune, but his wife kept saying "You don't have to play it, that's such a cheezy request". I was paralyzed for a minute, torn between the request and un-request.

If I had to place blame on things other than myself, I could also say that the requests are just too ridiculous. It's either something so archaic that my grandparents wouldn't have heard it, or something from the 80s which noone should want to remember anyways.

Overall, I really do like requests because it means that the crowd is listening and enjoys music, and it also challenges me to see how much I know or how much I need to learn. And, when I actually can give the people what they want...that's when I feel that I'm doing my job well.

So, next time you see me perform, don't be shy to request something. As my mentor Mark Buselli used to say when someone requested "Stairway to Heaven", - "I'll do my best".

If you live in Indy, I hope that you've had the chance to make it to the newly expanded Indianapolis Museum of Art. Last week, I sang and played in the new Pulliam Great Hall with my producer Bill Myers (bass), Steve Weakley (guitar), Cliff Jones (drums), and Dan Holmes (harmonica).

The event was a cozy VIP party for Indiana Convention and Visitors Assocation and we made some fans, like Kevin Johnstone, the director of trade shows for NAMM, the International Music Products Association. I also met an avid jazz lover, Ray Lepper of CEDIA. David Letterman made a brief appearance as he was privately touring the museum, but I was most excited about playing with such an awesome quartet for the first time!
